DVD burning problem since upgrade to Windows 7

I have a Vaio VGN-FW21M laptop and since upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 I have been unable to burn DVDs.  It will read the discs, just not burn or erase them.  I have tried all the steps listed on the support pages: cleaning the drive and updating the firmware & driver.  I have also downloaded all updates for my Vaio.  I have even uninstalled and reinstalled the drive. However, nothing has worked. Most of the time I just get a general error message saying an error has occured, though if I try and use the 'burn to disc' method in 'my computer' I get a message saying the write speed for the disc is either too fast or slow for the disc drive, even though I am using discs I have always used and had no trouble with before.  Please help as other than invest in a new DVD drive, I am at a loss as to what else to try!  If it helps the drive currently installed is a Matshita BD-MLT UJ230AS. Thanks
