My 4 year old DSC HX400V camera has an odd fault. It refuses to record files in anything other than the smallest 4.5m file size, even thought the largest file size, 18m is selected in the menu. The quality of the pictures reflects this. Any ideas anyone? Many thanks.

Thanks. A camera re-set has improved the situation. I now get file sizes of 6 to 8 MP when the menu setting of 18MPis selected. I shall do some experiments with varying subjects and varying file size settings and if necessary come back to you - whoever you are!
I suppose that there is a misunderstanding..
For stills (photo) what you can choose from camera menù is the picture size in Mpixels.
It’s not the file size in MByte.
The file size of a jpg file depends from so many things, but you don’t care.
What define the quality of the picture is the Mpixel size
