KD 49XD8305 no 5.1 audio on Optical Digital Output

I am trying to connect my 49XD8305 to my AV receiver via the optical digital ouput in order to get 5.1 audio from the built in Netflix App and Kodi, whcih i use to stream from my home server.

Looking through the sound setup the TV is telling me that Surround should be automatic but my receiver is telling me that I am getting 2 channel audio only. I have also tried connecting a Sony 4K DVD player to my TV, but the audio ouput from that is also showing as 2.0 only.

What am i  missing?

Welcome to the community. 

I'm just going to try to find some answers for you. In the meantime, maybe someone else in the community might have some ideas.
