Should I be able to record direct to an HDD from a kd43xf8096. I have tried registering the external disk and it suggests it is there for storage - not recording. Nothing regarding recording comes up when in the guide. The response is just "not available" if I press the record button. What am I doing wrong?
Hello @hillkf,
this help-article: https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/televisions-projectors-lcd-tvs-android-/kd-43xf8096/artic...
seems to imply, that the TV has multiple USB-ports - one of which can't be used for USB-recordings.

Thanks , it definitely does have multiple usb ports - 3 in fact - but one is blue and is , I thought, supposed to be the correst USB for HDD connection, but the references in the online help are all very vague.
Hello @hillkf,
the help-article states, that the correct port is labelled as such. You probably find the same information in the manual.

so it is the correct port - but still does not work , so the question stands - is it suppossed to be able to work??
Hello @hillkf,
from what I can tell it is supposed to work, yet Sony TVs are very picky with the HDDs they allow for recordings.
Maybe the one you are using needs to be formatted differently or you have to buy a different one all together.
Maybe this blog-article is of any help: https://community.sony.de/t5/how-tos-faqs-tvs-home-cinema/usb-hdds/ba-p/2486332
