If I'm in the next room, it connects but drops whenever I try to browse, If I'm any further away, it doesn't connect at all. It's only a new laptop bought last month and this has been a problem from day one.
This is obviously frustrating as my old laptop and phone can both connect perfectly all over my house. It is exactly the same at my girlfriend's house and my dad's house.
I have tried reinstalling the network driver and also doing a factory reset and neither have helped.
Any advice?
I too am having this same problem, works fine when next to router. Mine works ok on other routers. Others laptops work fine on my router.

If Sony cannot resolve the problem for you and all else fails. You might want to consider buying a Rokland n3
usb (with high-gain antenna included) wifi adapter. I bought one on ebay for 32 pounds, postage included from a seller in Florida,USA (less than half the UK price). Product includes software & drivers for XP,VISTA,Win 7 and Apple Mac laptops.
I've used the Rokland on both Microsoft OS and Apple OS laptops and the results are very impressive ! I demonstrated the unit to friends who have had problems with picking up and connecting to wifi access points in areas with poor signal strength. All of them have bought a Rokland n3. The only reason I'm so enthusiastic about the product is because it truly does what the manufacturer claims it can do.
Typed this message on a MacBook Pro 15" (late 2010/early 2011 model) while connected in a weak wifi signal
area in my flat. Signal strength with Rokland 75 to 81 % out of 100. Apple wifi adapter strength 30 % with signal and connection drops.
