PROBLEMS WITH NEW DRIVER

Hi.

laptop: VGN-SZ1M

I am trying to update the sound driver. Followed the installation instructions in the download page: Uninstall the old driver. Reboot and run the file I had already downloaded. The installation starts, but when looking for the device an error message appears:

Device is not present.Reboot and try to install.

But there is no way. I get always the same message. Ihave downloaded the file STDAUD-01108005-UN.exe several times and always the same. Even trying in secure mode.

Any ideas? Please Ihave no sound!!

Does the Sigmatel CXD9872 High Definition Audio Codec appear in Device Manager under 'Sound, Video and Game Controllers'?

If Yes, right-click on it and choose Update Driver and manually direct the path to C:\Update.

No it doesn't. There is a Audio device on High definition Audio Bus which is not working properly. It has the ! icon. There is nothing similar to what you are talking.

Is there an error code against the device with a yellow ! against it?

Have you tried double-clicking on it and under Driver, choose Roll Back Driver.

Alternatively try right-clicking on it and choose Uninstall and re-boot your Vaio. If the Found New Hardware Wizard appears, click on Cancel and go to C:\Updates and click on the downloaded file.

The other thing to try is to go to Control Panel -> Add Hardware and manually install the device.

The Sigma Tel chip cannot have disappeared !!! I suppose it may have failed - but this is unlikely.

If none of this works you will have to contact Vaio-Link as the problem seems to have been caused by the Update. They may suggest a Drive C: Recovery.

Sony have a nasty habit of providing audio drivers that don't work.

Last year the only way I could get the audio working on my Sister's Vaio was to head to Realtek's website (manufacturer of the audio chip in the laptop) and download a driver from there. That one worked fine. All Sony's versions complained about no device being found.

Similaly, the provided drivers with a recent Vaio I played around with didn't work either. In this case though, Sony's internet provided drivers did work.

I don't know what audio chip is in your laptop, but I'd suggest heading to the manufacturers site and seeing if they have any drivers you could try.
