What is this icon?

Can anyone tell me what this icon represents? It appears on the notification bar next to the signal strength bars / wifi symbol, as far as I can tell only since the most recent update but I might not have noticed it before.

The icon denotes NFC (Near Field Communication) a communication technology for very short distances. Used for swiping at point of sale and throwing files to other close NFC devices etc.

If you don't use it switch it off using the power widget as it probably saves battery having it off.
