I am unable to turn on the voicemail. I have recorded a message but cannot find the option to turn it on if I am unable to answer a call. Thanks!

Contact your service provider, they will guide you through the process. As it has to be setup initially providing the voicemail number and all.

Can you help with my other enquiry about turning off the dialpad whilst on a call?
alexdon is right. There is a proximity sensor which turns the screen off while calling.
Make a dummy call say to customer care nd try placing your hand near the LED during a call, see if screen turns off...?
