I am a new user here! I have upgraded my U to Icecream sandwich but it looks like the U cannot affort it...

Is it possible to go back to Gingerbread?

You can contact a local service location to have your phone downgraded to Android 2.3.

My experience, I was back on ICS within the day. GB is faster but it's twitchy...not smooth...feels cheap - general layout/fonts etc a little tacky.
