I quite often work with Excel files. One of them today hasn't opened by a reason of - 'Joh903.xls' cannot be accessed.

these error messages can denote that the file is corrupt or sometimes read only file can return this error but if you explained on which device you are having an issue with these .xls files then perhaps someone could offer further guidance or failing that try asking in a MS Excel support site.

An issue with MS Excel is hardly related to the Sony Notebook.

You know that there is no problem to get excel data back. You may apply Open&Repair function in MS Office Excel.

However, in case it isn't effective, then Google could assist you.
