Sony AG8 Netflix Dolby Vision picture issue.

Hi there,

I currently have a sony ag8 oled tv. However I currently having issues when displaying dolby vision content with the built in netflix app, I get alot of blocky textures on background white walls and lots of banding/blocky textures in dark scenes, plus a lot of artifacts in the black letter box bars. The only work round I found is putting the black level to 48 and increase the gamma to 1 to compensate, but I still get some blocky textures in the brighter scenes.

The same content watched in HDR is perfectly fine through a roku stick and sdr content is fine as well. I just seem to be having issues with Dolby vision content on the built in netflix app. Makes me think its software issue rather than hardware.

I've got the latest firmware version installed.

I have tried looking for solution on the internet, however I could not find any other complaint of this issue. So not sure if its widespread with the ag8 model or if it just an issue with my particular one. I have attached a picture showing my the issue, as you can see that there is a orange hue colour across the top of the screen and the textures in the wall in the background is very blocky.

Any help would be appreciated.

And what about the content itself? Have you raised the same question to netflix?

No I haven't raised it with netflix, because when watching the same content in regular hdr with roku streamstick +, the picture is perfectly fine. However, I will give the ago?

I have got a ticket open with sony as well, waiting for them to get back to me.

HDR content is not the same as the Dolby Vision content, they are two different files on Netflix server

Just contacted Netflix, went through all the trouble shooting steps with them and the conclusion was it's either my ISP or the TV causing the problems. Which I suspect most likely it's the tv issue as I had a LG oled before this and I didn't have any of these issues with dolby vision content.

Just have to wait see what sony say, hopefully they will have a solution. Shame I couldn't switch dolby vision off within the tv.

Same issue. We first had the af8 with the same problem after lots of arguing they replaced it with the ag8 which stills has the issue.  Struggling to get anywhere with them now.

Thanks for your input. I tried to get assistance from sony support, jump through all kinds of hoops, sent them various screenshots that they requested and after 5weeks they said it was an issue with internet connect as on the ag8 when streaming netflix 4k, the bitrate is 15.23mbits and because its not at the recommended speed of 25mbits which is quoted by netflix, sony said that is why I getting this issue. I did explain to them that my previous tv, streamed at the exact same bitrate with no issues and that hdr content stream perfectly fine. But they didn't want know and just blamed my internet connection, even though I've got a download speed of 55mbits.

If that what they said is something fake and something true...

Streaming content from netflix is indeed not one of high quality (bear in mind that a UHD blueray may manage bistream as high as 108mbps and also a standard fullhd bluray is about 30mbps.

In this days you have to add up also lower bitstream from any service due to covid situations.

Said so, if you have 15.23mbit actually from netflis THIS IS the MAXIMUM load they use for 4k (regardless of  HDR or not) and they recommend 25 just to have 15,23 stable.

Not a solution but I am having the same issues - Dolby Vision on Netflix is very dark and I get white flickering in the letterbox at times.

I have gone through the steps with both Netflix and Sony with Sony blaming internet connection when I have a 1GB connection.

Netflix blamed Sony and mentioned there was an update however Sony deny any such update.

So at a dead end right now. My hope is the Netflix app will get an update as it doesn't appear to be happening with other content via Sky Q

I think I've seen this mentioned in a different post.

Try adjusting the Contrast and Brightness settings using the Action Menu button while something is playing so you can get a better reference.
