How protect apps from auto-upgrade?

Have had to change my PC's SMB Server from version 1 to version 2.  This works fine with file managers such as X-plore and with streaming videos from the PC with KODI, but not with VLC.   https://tinyurl.com/y7a7lsng

By downgrading VLC from the present version 3.2.12 to version 3.1.7 it VLC works again.  But how to avoid it being auto-upgraded back to 3.2.12?  Would like to keep the auto-upgrade for other apps.

AFAIK there is no way to have automatically what you are looking for. You shoud disable automatic update globally for playstore and manually update only the app you want

Thank you Roob!  It was the answer I suspected.  Found a different solution: Installed VLC version 3.3.0-beta6, which does work with SMB2!
