Getting no 5.1 audio over ARC 49XD7004 and STR-DH550, for PC

Hello everyone, 

I'm having some problems with the new PC i built and getting it to output 5.1 sound that my receiver (STR-DH550) can use.

I might add that my PS4 spits out 5.1 audio when the audio settings are set to Primary Output Port HDMI OUT and Audio Format (Priority) Bitstream (DTS). If I set the audio format to Linear PCM or Bistream (Dolby) it stops outputting 5.1 sound and it's completely stereo.

On the TV (49XD7004) end my advanced settings for Input Related for the corresponding source are Dolby Dynamic Range Standard and Dolby Digital Plus Output Dolby Digital Plus. 

Again these settings give me great 5.1 sound for all games when the PS4 is also set to 4k RGB, connected in the following way:

PS4 <--HDMI--> TV (49XD7004) <--HDMI--> Receiver (STR-DH550)

The HDMI cable from PS4 to TV is connected to HDMI port 2 which supports 4k at 60hz.

Now comes the trouble, I recently built a computer with a NVIDIA RTX 2060 which is able to output 5.1 audio over the HDMI port. When I connect the HDMI from the output of the video card into the same HDMI port 2 my PS4 cable is normally in, without changing any settings advenced settings in sound of the corresponding source, it doesn't spit out 5.1 sound with the following settings:

As default sound device SONY TV *00 is selected. I configured it and chose the 5.1 surround setting. In Properties/Supported Formats (of the SONY TV*00) it shows:

The following audio formats are currenty supported:

Max number of channels: 6

HDCP: Supported

Bit Depths: 16-bit and 24-bit 

Sample Rates: 32kHz, 44,1kHz, 48kHz, 88,2kHz, 96kHz, 176,4kHz and 192kHz.

Encoded Formats: DTS Audio, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby Digital.

So it looks like it's detecting that the TV supports, over ARC, the correct formats, such as 6 channels and encoded formats. But I'm still only getting stereo sound.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Daniel,

Do you get 5.1 if you connect the PC to the receiver instead of the TV? The receiver should be able to pass through the video signal and output the audio signal directly from the speakers.

Thank you for being very detailed in describing your issue. It certainly helps us in understanding better the scope of your problem. You bring in your PS4 into the description of the issue which as far as I understand doesn't have a problem producing multi-channel surround sound at all. So strictly about your RTX 2060 and AVR, will you please clarify for us in more detail the quote below:

What type of procedure or testing method are you using on the Windows PC to reach that conclusion?

Sorry for the late response,

I get 5.1 when connecting to the receiver directly, the problem there is that it's only taking a 4k30Hz signal max. That's why I'm trying to send the 5.1 sound to the speaker via ARC.

The PS4 has no issues, that is correct. I believe that is related to the fact it's sending out compressed bitstream DTS 5.1 audio. And the PC might be sending out uncompressed PCM audio. I'm testing to see if it outputs 5.1 audio via the following procedures:

A 4k video with 5.1 DTS audio played back through VLC media player and MPC-BE. Another 4k video with 5.1 dolby digital audio played back through the same media players. And lastly the configure options under sound in windows, which I believe to be linear PCM audio (The test button that appears when you select 5.1 audio).
