2015 Bravia Android TV Issues

I thought I'd create a generic thread to cover off the issues being encountered on the 2015 Bravia Android TVs. I've listed my issues below with fixes / workarounds and responses from support. All comments and solutions welcome!

1) Hot Swap HDMI doesn't work - manifested by no input on HDMI channels 2, 3 and 4 on the KD-49X8305C. Workaround - reset the TV, either by holding down the remote power button for 5 seconds or by switching the TV off at the wall and then back on again. Further details on this thread: https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/kd-49x8305c-hdmi-2-3-4-inputs-not-working/td-p/1944435

2) HDD Recording doesn't work - error message states a system update is required but none is available when checking. Hopefully this will be fixed soon by a firmware update.

3) Netflix App doesn't work - this seems like the app has been deliberately disabled. So far a support case has only recommended that a factory reset be performed (took two days to get to that cracking piece of advice.....), with no improvement as a result. A temporary (albeit for advanced users only) workaround is provided by MikeLothian on this thread - https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/netflix-support-for-kd55x8509c-android-tv/td-p/1945360

4) Sound lag and performance issues after the TV (KD-49X8305C) has been on standby for a while - manifested for me as stuttering and sound / picture sync issues in all apps (youtube, amazon instant video etc) and HDMI sources (PS4, seperate YouView box etc). Hopefully this will be fixed in a firmware update, at the moment workarounds involve either changing channels to get the sync to work or in my case having to turn the TV off and then on again at the socket.

As stated previously, all comments welcome. Personally I'm willing to give Sony a couple of weeks to fix this, but if it's not done soon I'll be sending my new TV back for a refund as it's not really fit for purpose.

But one thing these sets are certainly reliable at is providing a rich fund of such reasons, from switching off when they aren't supposed to, as part of a spontaneous reboot, to not switching off when they are supposed to, because you pressed Stanby on the remote 🙂

As I've suggested all along... The fact that these sets cannot reliably be used for normal off-air television reception and the viewing of accessory sources etc renders them unfit for purpose as domestic television receivers.  We have a wide range of users who have contributed to this thread; varying both in their level of expertise and complexity in the way they use the sets... And much evidence of the same issues being reproduceable.

There's your basic leverage... Which is enhanced by all the other failings.

About the only thing I can see you COULD possibly do reliably with this set is use it as a dumb monitor...  Providing of course you're happy to unplug it at night and reboot it every morning.  - Hardly progress is it Sony?

Had my first refuse to die moment last night, ironic as I'd been watching the walking dead.  Not sure if this is what other people have experienced, as it wasn't a case of so the TV switching off and on again, on a single press of the power button the screen went black (bar light bleed in the corners) and led stayed on. Press power again and it came back to the home screen.  Hold to reboot didn't work.  My theory is something has failed to shut down, I tried force stopping the apps I'd used (ES Explorer, plex, Amazon and sony video player) but no joy and pulled the plug.  Did notice that things like Youview still showed as being a running app, even though I have it disabled.  Soooo many running 'apps'...

This is an infuriating fault - it happens to my KD43X8309CBU on average once a week - usually after I have gone to bed leaving my wife watching TV - I am then awakened from my slumbers to switch it off!! Usually I am able to persuade it to return to the home screen where settings / about / reset usually gets things going again!!

The set is invariably linked only to my Tivobox (Virgin Media) and we only use the Sony remote for switching it off and on. I haven't yet downloaded the December update as some folks have found the problem got worse. I am now waiting for the February update to see how that goes.

It really is disgraceful that a company like Sony can't even get it to switch on and off reliably. I really feel for those who are trying to use the TV's "smart" functions.

Has anyone figured out how to stop these stupid tv's to stop updating the TV channels I'm sick to death of deleting the porn channels as my 10 year old uses the TV more than me and has just asked what the xxx means this is disgraceful

Short answer is no... It's something else that's broken about them!

There is a menu option to turn the auto update off;but it seems to have little effect. It's not too bad on terrestrial... But the satellite tuner is pretty much unusable; and it is pretty upsetting to have this freak-fodder forced into your home.
