VAIO Z Series - Webcam (Windows 7 32-bit)

Hi all,

I recently did a clean install on Window 7 Ultimate 32-bit on a VGN-Z21VN and everything works correctly except the webcam. To be exact it does work (green light comes on; works in application etc…) but it fails intermittently when returning from sleep, standby or hibernation mode.

What happens is these devices are still listed as working in Device Manager (i.e. ‘Sony Visual Communication Camera’) but the camera does not function correctly – I just get a blank screen.

I notice the SVCC is using a Microsoft driver but there was no Vista driver for the camera either. In addition there is a related item called ‘USB Composite Device’.

To fix this probem I have to uninstall all the ‘USB Root Hubs’ and reboot to re-install the devices as the scan for hardware option doesn’t always get the camera working again.

The other thing that happens which kind of prompts me the webcam has failed yet again is the USB icon saying this device can run faster in a USB2 port instead of a USB1.1 port!

I have tried un-ticking the ‘Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power’ option on each 'USB Root Hub' but it does not make any difference.

I use the webcam quite a lot for Camtasia Studio so can’t disable it and would appreciate any recommendations.

Thanks for your time,

Alex.
