When you say that you no longer have the recovery image, do you mean that you have formatted the Recovery Partition on your HDD?  If not, you can start the Recovery Utility by tapping F10 during the boot sequence.  You can download the Recovery Guide for your model from here: -

ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/Manuals/RecoTS/2010Q2_TRG_EN.pdf

Alternatively, you can try reinstalling the Sony Utilities: -

Setting Utility Series

Vaio Event Service

from here:

http://support.vaio.sony.eu/computing/vaio/downloads/preinstalled/index.aspx?l=en_GB&m=VPCW22M1E_L

And also the update for the Intel Graphics here: -

http://support.vaio.sony.eu/computing/vaio/downloads/updates/index.aspx?l=en_GB&m=VPCW22M1E_L

Hi vaio_vpcw22m1e,

What OS do you have on your VPV-W22M1E now, is Ubuntu or the sony supplied windows 7.?

Are you sure you've deleted the hidden HDD recovery partition.?

Try starting your vaio and when you see the Vaio logo hit the F10 key repeatedly, hopefully this will start the recovery process..:smileywink:

You can order a set of recovery disc's from vaio support, however you'll need to purchase a USB optical drive to use the discs. To find contact details for Sony Vaio support..

Open Vaio support, either by clicking Support at the top of this page or use the following link:Vaio support

Under Log-in option 2: Select your VAIO model, next to Select Model Category - Select your model from the drop down list.

Then next to Select Model

Then click Log-In

Once logged select Get In Touch
