Hi, i have a huge problem - cd rom is not working, if i insert any cd/dvd it acts as if it was blank although burning doesent work as well. The only thing thats working is that i can eject the drive from windows. My VAIO is VGN-FS495. I havent installed any weird software or changed driver or anything like that and i have already tried to uninstall/install the driver but it didnt help.
Hi hasr.
Are there any yellow warnings (! or ?) in Device Manager against the drive? If so, is there an error code?
A while ago my DVD stopped working and I spent a lot of time removing and reinstalling software. Eventually after cleaning the lens of the dvd it worked again.
Identical problem here
I finally used Nero on several makes of DVDs and its come up on all saying power calibration failure
Sony support said to replace the entire laptpo (sz2xp)
so doing just that
Hey and thanks for the responses. There are no warnings in device manager. The laptop is like one month old. I have ofcourse tried to reinstal drivers etc.. all the things you usually do when something goes wrong :).. but none of it helped. How do I clean the lens?
If the Vaio is only one month old then I would try a full recovery, if that didn't work then I would take it back to the shop & demand a replacement.
Got mine refunded today so buying another one soon
it IS a faulty drive
Sony say its a ribbon issue that affects the laser
Although I had no problems installing things, blanks never worked in it or very rarely (we know lasers have different strengths so cable could be the issue)
Etiher way, get it back to your retailer for a replacement... you should not have this issue with such expensive laptop
I wish they didnt use this drive though!
best of luck.
I will do it. Thank you everyone!
This drive (along with its predecessor) has been a pain for many years. They are useless drives and Sony should have learnt by now. There are 4 letters in this drive's name that say it all. I'll leave you to work out which ...
