external hdd for laptop computers ?

i have a vaio laptop computer running windows 7 ,and i have been told that i can't connect a 2tb desktop hdd

running off the mains as it could damage the laptop .is that so ? if so i will have to make do with a 1tb hdd running from the 2.0 usb socket .

As long as the external drive has its own power source, I don't think there is any problem connecting a 2TB (or even 3TB) 3.5 inch hard drive to your laptop's USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 or eSATA port.

I expect 2TB 2.5 inch external drives will be along very soon.
