Slow after ICS - reinstalling hasn't helped!

Hello everyone

So I installed the ICS update through Sony PC Companion. Afterwards I noticed my phone lagging and being extremely slow to respond to various things. I waited a few days to let the phone settle but there was no improvement, so I did a full fresh install which hasn't really improved the performance much.

Some of the things that have really been annoying me are:

  • When someone phones me, regardless of what the phone is doing (or even if it's sleeping), it starts vibrating, then the band lights up, then the number pops up, then the contact info updates and finally I get the option to answer or reject the call. Once I accept the call the phone continues ringing for a second or two. The whole process takes about 5-8s which isn't really acceptable given the phone specs.
  • Keyboard really slow to respond at the beginning
  • Camera is very slow to launch
  • Occasionally the screen turns blank
  • Touches are occasionally very slow to register, including the Home etc buttons

Previous to the update I really enjoyed using my Xperia U, it was a wonderful little phone and I'm generally very happy with my Sony products. It's not an ideal situation to be in as I chose the phone trusting in Sony's committment to quality.

My SI number (for reference) is below

SI 1262-0728

Kind Regards

Braj Srigengan

Follow the instruction posted in this thread for a clean installation.

Then uninstall the apps that you don't use and disable what you can't uninstall.

In the settings menu>Developer options>Window animation scale : .5x

                                                             Transition animation scale: .5x

                                                              Background process limit: 2/3

Last option will get back to the default once you restart your phone, so remember to set it back to 2/3. It will also limit the multitasking capability but will save a lot of memory.

Thanks mate, I had basically done the whole clean installation thing before but the animation scale and transistion animation scale have really helped. I've also got GPU hardware acceleration enabled, will this help with performance too?

It will increase the graphics performance but it will make apps consume more RAM. And because of the low memory Xperia U has, I wouldn't recommend it. Also Background process limit really helps to save RAM if you are not doing a lot of multitasking on your phone.
