Sony STR-DN1080 Pure Direct, sub is always sounds

Dear Community!

I have a problem with the Pure Direct mode. My sub is always sounds, no matter if i switch to Pure Direct mode. I tried everything, from hdmi (pc and foobar) and from usb playback directly from the avr. The only way to bypass the sub is the 2ch stereo mode on the avr. But when i switch to Pure Direct mode, the display is turning off, but the sub still sounds. What setting do i  need to check on the avr?

Thank you for your answers!

I discovered that if i set the front speakers to Large, there is no sub with Pure Direct. But if i set the front speakers to Small, the sub is always working, even with Pure Direct mode. Why is that? I thought the pure direct mode turn off subwoorer, no matter if the front set to small or large speakers, and sending out pure stereo 2.0 only, full frequency range to the front speakers... Now i have to set the speakers back to small all the time when i want to watch a movie and switch back to large when i want to listen pure direct stereo 2.0. It is strange. Any ideas?

Hi szabeska,

Welcome to the community.

I'll see if I can track down an answer. Maybe someone else in the community has an idea in the meantime.

Thanks,

Pascale

Thank You!

I just discovered that the Pure Direct is only working without sub if i set the front Speakers to Large. I thought its automatically switch them to Large, but its not. I need to switch them to Large every time i want to play music, and switch them back if i want to see a movie with sub. So sad. There is no other way to turn off the sub automatically with Pure Direct/ Small speaker setup?

Thank you!

Pure Direct is not necessarily 2.0, it essentially bypasses all of the internal circuitry related to EQ to ensure that you get the highest quality possible.

Since that's not what you're looking for, I'd recommend switching the Sound Field to 2Ch Stereo to achieve true 2.0.

I referenced this very handy table of Sound Field settings and their effects in the Help Guide here: https://helpguide.sony.net/ha/strdn108/v1/en/contents/TP0001227304.html

PS: most large speakers have Woofers and Subwoofers which negate the use of a dedicated subwoofer, which the amp switches On/Off based on.

So Small = Subwoofer On, Large = Subwoofer Off. This can be found in a note here as well: https://helpguide.sony.net/ha/strdn108/v1/en/contents/TP0001221242.html
