I tried to perform a software update this morning through PC companion, everything seemed fine, had a green light then got message that update had failed; retried connecting (holding down volume and plugging in USB) but now there is no sign of life even when connected to charger. There was pproximately 86% left in the battery. Is there anything I can do to get it to turn on?

If it's not turning on then try holding power and volume up untill you feel 3 vibrations 1 after the other not 1 on it's own - Then try turning it back on if you still have no luck then you will have to run a repair using SUS found here emma.extranet.sonyericsson.com/update_service_setup download and install and follow the on screen instructions - This should repair your phone as this works in flashmode and not normal mode like PCC does to begin prior to rebooting in flashmode
