I started to measure power consumption in standby with an EdiMax SP-2101W and FHEM software.

First test I have done is with optimized settings like:

Remote start: disabled

Automatic software downloading: disabled

There are easily 50-100 wake-ups per night which might sooner or later upset the PSU.

At least with those optimized settings, it went to deep sleep for the first time about half an hour after switching off the set (going from ~20W to 0.5W).

This test was done with the antenna cable unplugged. It might very well be that the TV therefore fails to update the EPG/services, retrying every X minutes.

@Anonymous @Peter_S. Maybe you guys can find something out about Sony standby behavior? That does not look too healthy...

Next night I will try with antenna cable plugged in.

Seems like the TV frequently calls home. No surprise that there are nightly crashes...

But if I ping the TV interface from my computer, with the TV off for a whole night, it works. So I am not sure if it is (deep) sleeping or what either.

With signal cable plugged in, the picture changed only slightly. The TV went into deep sleep a bit later. It could perform the EPG/service update this time. Still it woke up every few minutes.

Next tests:

(1) WiFi disabled

(2) Remote start enabled, automatic software updating enabled (to check whether the TV goes into deep sleep at all)

I had a similar issue.

Main cause was the Update GUIDE in STBY.

https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/android-tv/android-tv-in-stby-mode-sometimes-not/m-p/2294485

Heat is also high and is dissipated even on aerial port or satellite both ports

Yes I have this suspicion too about on purpose "things".

Those TVs were a real failure. Today I manually deleted some Satellite channels and a few minutes later they "came back" viewed on GUIDE as 1000(two channels) as 1002(two channels) as 1003(two channels) and by browsing by UP/DOWN with RC PROG+/- the Info Bar indicated numbers like 10001, 10002, 10003, 10004 etc. Meanwhile in Settings - Channel setup - Digital setup - Satellite Set-up - Satellite Programme List Edit, those channels were nowhere. They did not exist!!!!!

I don't know about new 2017 XEs and A1s but I suppose electronic circuits are similar and......

It gets even worse. This is what it looks like after enabling Remote start:

Right until 23:00, the TV kept going to sleep and waking up every few seconds without the user noticing anything. So what happens at 23:00... well... my Synology NAS is being switched off for the night. Some network traffic indeed prevents the TV from staying asleep. I wonder how long the TV can survive that and how many broken power supplies suffered from this issue...

But even with Remote start being disabled, the TV keeps waking up every few minutes in my network, also with the Synology NAS being switched off. So there still seems some traffic that wakes the TV up which stops after unplugging the LAN cable and switching off Wi-Fi.

It would probably be best if the firmware shut down the network interfaces when going into deep sleep.

Because Sony claims it is 0.5W w/o network and 3.00W(Wi-Fi) / 3.00W(LAN) / 0.50W(Bluetooth), so I assume 6.5W.

I believe the manufacturers are bound by law to respect some values, as I think the real values can't be (much) above what they claim.

I measure 3-4 minutes per hour in which the TV consumes 20W due to wake-ups. The rest of the time it is at 0.5W. These numbers are without Remote start being enabled. In that case I would expect the TV to permanently stay in deep sleep (0.5W) without any wakeups, which is not the case though. So the average will be higher than those 0.5W of course.

After enabling Remote start, deep sleep power consumption increases to 0.5-2W (I think this is the 3W figure provided by Sony), from which it also frequently wakes up like in the above case. So the real average might be higher.

The problem is that the average depends on your network environment and how often it makes the TV wake up. The TV seems quite sensitive to certain traffic and consequently will wake up more or less often. So probably with a router and only the TV connected to it, it will stay asleep, constantly only drawing those 0.5W.

Ok, thanks. I asked because as I mentioned early my network interface(s) are always down after deep sleep. And this happened straight after a factory reset. So I am clueless about what to do, maybe apart from enabling everything. The Android TV app (remote control), which always worked, now doesn't seem to be able to connect via either WiFi or BlueTooth when the TV is off. It finds my TV, though. It just doesn't connect.

Any idea about what "IP Control" exactly does and how much it may consume? At the worst I may turn it on until the next reset to factory settings.. Hoping it will fix it. It's quite annying to have to wait a minute or so each time I turn the TV on.

Your network behavior indeed looks quite weird. However turning down the network interfaces in deep sleep does not sound wrong as it most probably fixes the frequent wake-ups. I have to manually disable WiFi to make the wake-ups go away. NICs should of course be re-enabled on resume.

I now did some more testing. I performed a "forced factory reset" together with a "data factory reset" to be abolutely sure, see here. I only set up WiFi and the Google account. The processor still wakes up every few minutes. I then tried a different Access Point with only the TV connected. Still same problem.

So this is for sure a FW problem, at least with Marshmallow. I am also quite confident that those wake-ups sooner or later cause those crashes/reboots that we also observed.

No clue what IP Control does...

Hello!
I'm already thinking of going to consumer protection.
My TV every 5 minutes, switch on (electronics only) will appear on the internet communicating with the sony and google servers. if I turn off the internet, I pull out the cable, it will turn on every 5 minutes. and consumes 13 to 18 watts. I wrote a sony support but I have not received an answer yet. sure it's not a good operation and it will quickly fall into the power supply.

It generates 30MB of traffic on the Internet.<BR

I gave up contacting Sony support for this reason.

If they ever answer your mail, they will ask you to perform a factory reset. I am quite sure about that. It won't help like most of the time. I tried...

they do not read this forum?

I also feel that they do not deal with the problems of users!

I did the factory reset.
I did not accept any privacy (sony and google).
Unfortunately, the TV also turns on every 5 minutes and connects to the Internet.

Kuschelmonschter wrote:

Your network behavior indeed looks quite weird. However turning down the network interfaces in deep sleep does not sound wrong as it most probably fixes the frequent wake-ups. I have to manually disable WiFi to make the wake-ups go away. NICs should of course be re-enabled on resume.

[...]

No clue what IP Control does...

The problem is that before the reset I had WiFi disabled and the Ethernet was connecting immediately after wakeing up. Now it takes a minute.

Now I enabled IP Control and the connection is always there. The downside is that I believe it doesn't deep sleep anymore at all. It's too fast to wake up. And I agree, I am quite sure we can add the Deep Sleep/Wake Up issues to the list of major bugs in this OS. Which includes: Audio PassThrough, USB Module, and I'd put Profile VP9.2 Codec on Android 7.0 as well (maybe it isn't major but sure it is annoying).

The fact that your TV probably does not deep sleep anymore might also be the reason why you are not seeing so many silent reboots anymore. I am pretty confident that the two issues are connected...

I found something about IP Control here. So you can control the TV by sending it commands over network. I think your assumption that this prevents deep sleep makes sense.

I never used IP Control so this is not the cause for the frequent wake-ups.
